During the last week of September, with fall nipping at our heels, Max and I embarked on an adventure in celebration of a now newly-wed couple, in none other than Mykonos, Greece. In addition to being honored with an invitation to this special event, we were also given an entirely reasonable excuse to jetset across the Atlantic for five days and four nights at the end of September.
Mykonos is every bit as magical as I had imagined. The sunsets, the beaches, the beach bars and the beautiful people all interplay to create a sense of suspension so rare in our daily hustle. As soon as we arrived, after a relatively seamless trip, we were whisked away to Scorpios - arguably one of the best beach bars around. A quick espresso martini made with the country's best had us leaving all notions of jet lag behind.
End of September in Mykonos marks the end of their high season, but that's the magic of being part of a wedding group - you are the party.
We all stayed at the Myconian Utopia Resort, a Relais & Châteaux estate. From the moment of our arrival, with fresh strawberry juice and cool towels, through the sparkling hospitality that stretches into the wee hours of the morning...ahem room service all night long, our stay was as cushy as could be.
Although none of the food is locally grown in Mykonos, the mainland is a stone's throw away and everything we ate was delectable. From spinach pies at Nammos, another famed beach bar to the juiciest of olives and fresh breads and dips to start every meal - it's island living at its best.
The island is not big, the roads are winding and even in the off season, traffic hits every once in a while. Rent ATVs and cruise past all the cars, get a lay of the island and find the secluded beaches from which to watch the sun disappear into the water. Mykonos, really is every bit as magical as you can image.
Though we did a good job maxing out our time on the island, I would love to get lost in the quaint but trendy town of Mykonos. You know what they say - you have to leave something for next time. While Mykonos has been at the top of my list to visit for a while...it appears it has found a place at the top of my list to revisit. Until next time - Jamas!
